Today we were able to show a family their new, fully adapted home – designed especially to meet their needs – as part of a new build development completed this year on the site of their old home. The family of four includes a young man who is a wheelchair user and who will be able to grow in confidence and independence as a result of the range of adaptations designed into the build.
The property was previously a bungalow with widened doors but with little else which could support independent living. As well as the bungalow, there was also one 1 bedroomed flat. These were demolished and the redesign of the whole site means that as well as a fully adapted 4 bedroom home, there are now also two 1 bedroomed flats, meaning that there are now more homes to meet more need on the same ground – but which would allow the family to move back to their home and support networks of many years.
During the course of the demolition and re-build, we and the contractor, WK Plasterers/KEEBS, have worked closely with the family whose home now boasts widened hallways and doorways for full wheelchair access, a fully adapted “rise and fall” kitchen where the height of the sink and cooker hob can be adjusted by whoever is using it, and a fully adapted en-suite bathroom/wetroom off Mark’s bedroom, which also has level access straight out to the garden through patio doors.
It was an emotional visit for the family. Mrs Cook, who is mam to Mark and Vaughn, said “We are overwhelmed with our home, it’s beautiful. It will make a big difference to us, especially my son Mark who can’t live independently at the moment.”
For the visit the family were joined by Dawn Bowden, AM for Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney and Fran Bevan, Chair of Democratic Body of Merthyr Valleys Homes – both of whom were very impressed with flats and the family home, and the difference that this will make to the family.
Dawn Bowden AM said, “It’s great to see this amazing development supporting a family to return to their home”.
Fran Bevan added “I am really proud to be part of this mutual when I can see the difference MVH makes to the lives of its tenants”
The family will shortly be receiving the keys and we wish them well in their new home.
