Age Connects Morgannwg is the operating title of Age Concern Morgannwg, a charity for older people living in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Bridgend and Merthyr Tydfil.  They manage Marsh House.

Marsh House is a community step down facility in Merthyr which opened its doors last month. The facility is for patients who are not acutely unwell but need rehabilitation and ongoing support to reach their potential before their final discharge back home or into residential care.

A few weeks back Marsh House found they needed outdoor furniture for their residents and staff to be able to spend some time outside in the fresh air.  The waiting time for a delivery of benches was weeks so thankfully our very own Tommy Power a carpenter from Merthyr Valleys Homes offered to make some benches for them.

Tommy handmade two benches in his garden.  Not only was it rewarding to help others, it was helpful for Tommy as well.  Spending time being creative and completing a task outdoors was beneficial for Tommy.

‘It was nice to be able to use my skills to support those in need, but it was also nice to be able to spend time in the garden building something different – I really enjoyed it’

‘I have to mention Kevin Clifford (A Supervisor at Merthyr Valleys Homes), he spent a lot time going around sourcing all the materials needed to make the benches. Wouldn’t of been able to make them without him’ – Tommy

It was fantastic to see Marsh House employees enjoying well deserved breaks in the sun on the benches Tommy made. Thank you to Age Connects Morgannwg for sharing these pictures on twitter.

#MentalHealthAwareness #KindnessMatters

Helping others feels good

Studies have found that acts of kindness are linked to increased feelings of wellbeing.1 Helping others can also improve our support networks and encourage us to be more active.4 This, in turn, can improve our self-esteem.5 There is some evidence to suggest that when we help others, it can promote changes in the brain that are linked with happiness.2
