As part of our Brighter Futures Scheme, we offer a range of career and employment support. One element of this support, is school work experience placements. Read below about Kian's time with us.

Kian's Story

Kian Thomas was referred to Merthyr Valleys Homes by Careers Wales after it was identified that he would benefit from extended work experience to support his development and career aspirations.

At the start of his placement, Kian was quiet and lacked confidence, despite having a strong interest in carpentry. To support this, he joined the WHQS team and was paired with an experienced carpenter, providing valuable hands-on experience in a real working environment.

From day one, Kian demonstrated a strong work ethic and willingness to learn. Over time, his confidence grew, and he became more comfortable within the team - building positive relationships and playing an active role in day-to-day tasks.

The impact extended far beyond practical skills. Both his teacher and mother noticed a significant improvement in his confidence, motivation, and overall wellbeing. Kian began to enjoy coming into work and developed a more positive outlook on his future.

Reflecting on his experience, Kian said:

“This opportunity helped me massively with my confidence and allowed me to meet new people and build good working relationships.”

During his placement, Kian developed a wide range of skills across construction and multi-trades, particularly enjoying hands-on learning:

“I really enjoyed learning plastering as it was new to me, and working with tenants helped build my confidence.”

With guidance and support from the team, he gained valuable carpentry experience and a deeper understanding of the trade:

“I enjoyed learning how important measurements are and fitting kitchen doors and cupboards, especially seeing how happy tenants were when the work was completed.”

Kian also gained key qualifications, including COSHH, Manual Handling, and Level 1 Construction Health & Safety, alongside a stronger understanding of workplace responsibilities.

Positive feedback from both tenants, peers and school staff played an important role in his development:

“It made me feel proud and more confident, and my school said they’ve seen a big positive change in me.”

The experience has given Kian a clear direction for the future:

“Hands-on learning works better for me. I hope to return to MVH one day—I’m determined to achieve my carpentry apprenticeship.”

With continued support from Aspire 2 Achieve, Kian is now progressing with confidence and is well on his way towards achieving his career goals.

Kian has secured an apprenticeship with rynik carpentry and building services limited.

We’ve worked with Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council's Biodiversity Team to improve a large green space in Trefechan.

Merthyr Valleys Homes in partnership with TFW (Transport for Wales) is encouraging sustainable travel by offering tenants free access to secure cycle hangar spaces.

For a little while, we’ve been wondering if we should be looking at creating a mobile app for tenants – as a mutual, we know the best way to find out is to ask.   

Last month, our Grant Panel awarded over £10,000 to local community groups and activities.

What is condensation? Condensation happens when warm, moist air meets a cold surface, such as a window or wall. The air condenses and runs down the surface as water droplets. Condensation is more of a problem in winter than in spring or summer, as the surfaces are often cooler, and the home is less likely to have windows and doors open for long periods. We all get condensation on our windows occasionally, but this isn't necessarily a problem if it clears up quickly.
