Samantha started her role as a Trainee Data Protection Coordinator with Merthyr Valleys Homes in September 2023.

Prior to working with MVH, Sam worked for a small solicitor's firm in Aberdare where her job was to oversee accounts and carry out legal secretary duties. Even though Sam enjoyed her job, she felt she was ready to look for a new role with development opportunities that would help with career progression in the future.

When the Trainee Data Protection Coordinator position became available, Sam felt it was a good opportunity for a change of career where she can complete her qualification while working. Sam has heaps of transferable skills and some knowledge of GDPR from her previous role in the solicitors, she also has a law degree.

I asked Sam what she liked about the role, she said. "Learning on the job, every day is different as you don't know what requests are going to come through. I find it really interesting, even though there is a lot to learn I enjoy reading up on all the policies and guidanceā€.

Sam works closely with Nicola Aubury, our Data Protection Manager, and feels that Nicola is a great mentor. Nicola supports Sam through all SAR requests and updating policies and procedures. Sam is hoping that over time her confidence will grow, as well as her skills and knowledge around GDPR.

Sam loves working for Merthyr Valleys Homes, she states that everyone is so helpful and friendly, which has made it easy for her to settle into the organisation. She is also grateful for the opportunities available to her and can't wait to undertake more training in the future.
